ACT Supporters Group
#1
I just received an email from Flea asking for people to help set up a new supporters group for the ACT. There is going to be a meet and greet some time soon at the Hellenic Club.

About time I reckon. This area has around 400 members and I would think there would be a lot of non-member supporters, perhaps way-higher than the normal ratio as there is little incentive to join up (no games here). This was the message.

ACT Richmond Supporters' Group

Dear Richmond members and supporters,
Thank you for your support of the mighty Tigers. We greatly value your commitment to the Club, in this exciting phase of our journey back to the top.
Richmond has a strong following in the ACT, with almost 400 Richmond members, and many more supporters, living in the region. As a result, the Club is looking to establish an ACT Richmond Supporters' Group in 2013.
We believe the key to a successful future for the Club lies with our proud, passionate and loyal supporters, who live right throughout Australia. The Club is working to strengthen the relationships with its supporter groups nationwide.
Our establishment of the Hobart Supporters' Group in mid-2010 has been a fine achievement. With the Club's backing, the Hobart Group has grown to almost 200 members and raised more than $10,000 for the Club.
The Hobart Supporters' Group has regular functions to catch up and socialise, and the steady increase in their member numbers is encouraging, particularly as the Tigers have not played a game in Tasmania since the group was formed.
Richmond now invites you to be part of the Club's ACT Supporters' Group, either as a committee member or a supporter.
An inaugural meeting, on a date to be confirmed, will be held at The Helenic Club in Canberra. This will be a meet and greet and information session.
Please contact me if you are interested in being part of Richmond's ACT Supporters Group, or would like more information.
Go Tigers.

If he is a member then I assume he would have got the email.

Flea sent a follow up saying he had already received many responses and he thinks we will have something brewing early new year. He attached the guidelines for running supporters groups, which are a bit daunting (but totally fair) like obligations, monies expected and incentives from the club.

The group had its first meeting this evening. Office holders were elected (well, appointed, some positions have more than one and everyone who wanted to got themselves elected).

The group is already planning a few events: nothing too grandiose to start with but a bus trip to the Sydney game and a link-up with the Sydney group will be popular. We have already made positive links with the Queanbeyan Tigers, who have offered us their ground for an outdoor venue (for family days and the like).

Flea was as I expected. Lovely bloke, met him afterwards. He took a lot of questions but didn't reveal anything that we haven't already discussed on this forum. He spent most of his time confirming, in his opinion, that things were looking up at Tigerland. He expects finals because of the depth in rookies and improvement in training facilities with Punt Rd being the main improvements for the squad. He did talk at one stage about someone not having done enough work despite clear messages but I didn't catch who it was. Someone known to someone in the room I guess, one of the kids.

So no scoops but I feel the group will be a good one. The latent, unrequited support is here and just needs an outlet.

So, @Egg, are you President, or som such grand poo-bah?

Great move in ACT, by the way, given the interest in AFL and the local clubs there. Always found, for the five years I lived in Canberra, that the absence of a strong AFL presence was a de-facto bonus to the NRL.

As I 've posted elsewhere (interstate games thread) always keen to make the trip to Manuka Oval to watch any pre-season games the Tiges play.

Little hint, Flea says he will do a lot of things but does not follow through. Not because he isn't a man of his word, just because he is inundated with requests and running of the supporter groups. Do whatever you can early on to get Flea on your side and he will be an enormous help to you both to the group and you personally. He offered to give a tour to the members of the Hobart supporters group through Punt rd, meeting the players, attending training, change rooms after the match etc etc.....Plus he is such a great bloke to chat with.

Also if you do manage to get him to attend a function, try and arrange things around him talking as much as possible. He loves being the centre of attention and does a very good job of it Big Grin

I didn't nominate, I do heaps with my cricket club so I'll leave it to others. May offer to help if there seems to be a need. The people that put themselves forward seemed a good bunch.

I got the impression that the group had already done well with him. They initiated contact and he kept saying how they had done all the work he usually has to do to this point. Probably an advantage being a completely new group in that he didn't have to "reform" any existing practices.
