The Ben Cousins booze-bus biathlon bolt
Daile Pepper
The Age
September 3, 2010

Ben Cousins fans are bracing themselves for the challenge of a lifetime.

The inaugural Ben Cousins Biathlon will see competitors retrace the steps the fallen footballer took after abandoning his then girlfriend Samantha Druce in a car on Canning Highway, performing the now infamous booze-bus bolt.

Featuring a run and swim – but no bike – the event will prove a challenge for sober competitors who are not paid bucket-loads to remain in peak physical condition. It will include a re-enactment of the swim to nowhere that had Cousins reaching the middle of his attempted river crossing and then turning back after realising there was a possibility he could drown.

A Facebook group inviting people to participate so far has more than 1900 people attending, with numbers increasing by the hour.

"On 12 February 2006, Cousins fled a booze bus by abandoning his Mercedes-Benz and girlfriend Samantha Druce in the middle lane of Perth's Canning Highway and running from police with a male passenger," the event organisers wrote.

"The male passenger was later caught and breath-tested, but Cousins eluded the police.

"His intricate escape route was revealed on his recent documentary, and with careful retracing of his movements, Saturday the 12 of February 2011 will be the inaugural running of the Cousins Biathlon."

Yet again, Cousins is proving an inspiration.

The real Cousins bolt involved running through backyards, jumping fences, swimming out to the middle of the river and back, and running up to the Blue Water Grill to demand a phone call and deny his true identity.

Organiser Damon Bull said the event would be a real celebration of Cousins' abilities, held on the fifth anniversary of his runner from the police.

"I saw the humour in some of the things he did," Bull said of Cousins' many escapades.

"When you grow up in Perth you can relate to some of what he has done. Everyone just likes a good time."

The organisers are looking for people in the area to offer up their backyards to be included in the race and are tossing up whether to hold the after party at the Blue Water Grill where Cousins ended up.

The fun police will no doubt think this is a bad idea, giving young people the wrong message about doing runners from the police, drink driving and a myriad of other dodgy things the runner involved.

But it is hilarious.

The organisers have floated the idea that Cousins himself might like to be involved in the event.

C'mon Ben, are you going to show them how it's done?

The route competitors will complete as they re-enact Ben Cousins' bolt from a booze bus.

The incident itself probably deserves it's own thread, but i'll put it here since he is a draft prospect.

Draft prospect Darling in hospital after attack

HIGHLY-touted draft prospect Jack Darling is recovering in a Perth hospital after being the victim of an unprovoked attack on the weekend.

Darling, who is likely to feature anywhere from the first through to the third round of November’s NAB AFL Draft, suffered bruising to his brain and a fracture to his skull after being attacked leaving a Subiaco hotel on Sunday night.

Police are investigating the incident which left the key forward in a hospital bed with his family by his side.

“Some thugs jumped Jack and his friends as they were leaving the hotel to go to a taxi rank, when Jack hit his head so hard on the pavement he fractured his skull,” Darling’s manager, Colin Young, told sportsnewsfirst.com.au. “The family are hoping there might be some CCTV footage of the incident which would help police in their investigations.

“Now they are hoping they can be left alone while Jack continues his recovery.

“Mrs Darling rang me to inform me of the attack and that they would be in hospital for several days.

“The seriousness of the attack has left every one disgusted and for the present time, it is in everyone's best interest to give the family some space.”

Darling was a sensation at the 2009 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.

Playing as a centre half-forward in a team comprising the likes of Anthony Morabito and David Swallow, he helped lead Western Australia to victory in the carnival and was named All-Australian.

He enjoyed a solid carnival this year, playing in attack as well as on the ball, although opinions are varied as to how high he will be selected in the 2010 NAB AFL Draft.

Very very unlucky. I wish him a safe recovery.

My boy got 13 votes in the Jack...to come equal 33rd...and he wears number 33.

Interestingly, Gourdis and O'Reilly (14 votes) both had more votes than Hislop, Thomo and Polo (i know Polo didnt play much but he only got 2 votes).

Promote my boy Dimma...back to the senior list...he deserves it :)

Some nuff nuff on another site says my boys kicking is bad and ought be traded or delisted - seriously why i bother going to that other site i dont know.

His kicking isnt that bad...awkard style, I grant you but high efficiency rate, takes marks and gives great leg speed coming out of the backline...he burnt off Sarge pretty easily on the weekend...but then had no one to kick it to as we were a little static at that time.

I think he deserves a promotion, but I am biased as I sponsor him...what do the 'neutral' tiger supporters think?

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick says Richmond has started to gain respect in the AFL after some encouraging performances in 2010.

However, Hardwick said the Club would be taking no short cuts in its bid to achieve success, in a speech delivered to guests at the 2010 Jack Dyer Medal evening.

Below is an extract from the speech:

If there is one thing I have learned in my time in football, it is that there is no short cut to success.

Success requires hard work and dedication, and it means making hard decisions. It requires an absolute resolve to set this Club on a path and stick to it.

I want to tell supporters tonight that we commit to all these things, that we will build and build and we will get better.

We have started down that path in 2010 and I think we have made some important progress.

It is incumbent on every one of them to leave no stone unturned. I know they won’t and it is what excites me.

Any improvement across our club needs to be underpinned by the standards we set ourselves on and off the field.

The staff and players realize these standards are not negotiable and everyone around the club will hold each other accountable - that is our promise to each other, our members and our supporters.

They are standards driven from the top down and a tribute to the leadership of our President Gary March and his board, our CEO Brendan Gale and our General Manager of Football Craig Cameron.

It is something the Club is beginning to be recognized for externally and that is a very important step forward.

This club cannot afford to take short cuts and every decision we make will be done with a Premiership Cup in mind.

Jack Riewoldt has capped off a superb, break-out season of AFL football by winning his inaugural Jack Dyer Medal.

Riewoldt becomes the first player in Richmond’s history to win the Best and Fairest and the competition’s leading goalkicker award in the same season.

The exciting, young full-forward, who took out the Coleman Medal, with 78 goals in the 2010 home-and-away season, edged out Tiger captain Chris Newman in a thrilling Jack Dyer Medal count held in the Palladium Ballroom at Crown this evening.

Riewoldt polled 210 votes to win by six from Newman on 204 votes, with Brett Deledio, winner of the past two Jack Dyer Medals, in third place on 193 votes. Dustin Martin underlined the impact he had in his debut season by finishing fourth with 159 votes, while in fifth place was Shane Tuck, who continued his remarkable run in the Jack Dyer Medal. It was Tuck’s sixth top-10 finish in six full seasons of AFL football with the Tigers. Shane Edwards, who received the Club’s Most Improved Player award, was sixth, while Trent Cotchin, despite missing four games late in the season due to suspension, finished seventh.

It took Riewoldt until Round 9 to take the lead in the 2010 Jack Dyer Medal count, which he did, courtesy of a top-class, six-goal effort in a losing side against Essendon. The 21-year-old then racked up the votes in the following few rounds, scoring a perfect 25 for his outstanding, match-winning 10-goal display against West Coast at the MCG in Round 12. Riewoldt had a comfortable 14-vote lead after Round 15, but by the end of Round 19, Newman had worked his way in front. The Tiger skipper still held a slender lead after Round 20, but a brilliant seven-goal performance by Riewoldt, in the Round 21 loss to St Kilda at Etihad Stadium, was the clincher. Riewoldt regained the lead and did enough in the final round to hang on to claim his first Jack Dyer Medal.

Throughout the 2010 season, Riewoldt scored three goals or more 14 times, and four goals or more on eight occasions. From Round 8-15, he kicked 43 goals, which was the highest individual total in a consecutive eight-game period by an AFL player since Essendon’s Matthew Lloyd in 2001. Riewoldt was ranked No. 1 at the Club for total marks (123), No. 1 for contested marks (54), No. 1 for marks inside-50 (79) and equal No. 5 for tackles (68).

Newman enjoyed his best season of league football in 2010 and his second placing in the Jack Dyer Medal was his highest finish in the Club’s Best and Fairest. The Tigers captain averaged 19.5 disposals per game in his 21 appearances and had 20 disposals or more 12 times. He was ranked No. 2 in the rebound-50s category at the Club (79), No. 5 for total disposals (410), No. 4 for total marks (101), No. 6 for inside-50 entries (52) and equal No. 5 for tackles (68).

Deledio had an excellent season, in a new role under coach, Damien Hardwick, as a rebounding half-back. The 23-year-old veteran of 128 league games had 20 disposals or more 20 times. He was ranked No. 1 at the Club for kicks (302), No. 2 for handballs (254), No. 1 for total disposals (556), No. 2 for total marks (116), No. 1 for inside-50 entries (76) and No. 1 for rebound-50s (93).

Martin had an instant impact in Richmond’s midfield throughout his debut season of AFL football. The 19-year-old averaged just over 20 disposals per match in his 21 games, and had 20 disposals or more 11 times. He was ranked No. 1 at the Club for clearances (97), No. 3 for total disposals (425), No. 2 for inside-50 entries (74), No. 2 for contested possessions (179) and No. 4 for tackles (70).

Tuck didn’t earn senior selection at Tigerland until Round 3, but he quickly made up for lost time with his customary vote-catching form. The 28-year-old averaged 25.5 disposals per game in his 20 appearances and had 20 disposals or more 16 times. He was ranked No. 3 at the Club for kicks (227), No. 1 for handballs (283), No. 2 for total disposals (510), No. 2 for clearances (92), No. 3 for inside-50 entries (66) and No. 1 for tackles (103).

The voting system for the Jack Dyer Medal is, as follows . . .

After each game, the five members of the Club’s match committee cast votes for each of the team’s 22 players.

Each player receives zero to five votes from each coach, so the most an individual player can poll in a match is 25 votes.

Five votes are awarded for an outstanding performance, four for an excellent game, all the way down to zero if the player is well beaten on the day.

Other award winners announced at the 2010 Jack Dyer Medal night were:

YOUNG Swan Dan Hannebery has won the Ron Evans Medal as the 2010 AFL Rising Star.

The second-year onballer collected the maximum 45 votes, followed by young Demon Tom Scully (35), the Lions' Tom Rockliff (24), Melbourne's Jack Trengove (11), and Roo Ryan Bastinac (6).

Hannebery will play for the Swans in Sunday's elimination final against Carlton at ANZ Stadium.

He described the prestige award as a major honour, but admitted most of his attention has been taken up with preparing for his first AFL final.

"It is a huge honour, obviously with the company you are in when you win it," he said.

"It hasn't sunk in as all my focus is on Sunday."

While Hannebery has made a dream start to his AFL career he is under no illusions about what lies ahead.

"I know I have a lot of work to do still and a lot of development," he said.
Hannebery joins Adam Goodes as the only Sydney players to have won an award that dates back to 1993, when Nathan Buckley of the Brisbane Bears was the winner.

Hannebery, 19, is seen to have mixed a consistent season with five big games against Melbourne, Hawthorn, Richmond and North Melbourne.
He was taken as a Xavier College schoolboy with pick 30 in the 2008 national draft.

While he played representative football as a 12-year-old in the national primary schools championships in 2003, Hannebery was never viewed in the same league as Tom Scully, Ryan Bastinac or Steele Sidebottom.

He completed his Year 12 while playing seven senior games in 2009 at half-forward.

The 2010 Jack Dyer Medal shapes as the most even and exciting in many years, with as many as four top chances to take ‘Jack’ home, when the count is conducted tomorrow night (Wednesday, September 1) at the Crown Palladium.

Brett Deledio, shooting for his third straight Richmond Best and Fairest award, has had an excellent season in a sweeping role across half-back, but he faces strong opposition from Tiger captain, Chris Newman, star spearhead, Jack Riewoldt, and young gun, Dustin Martin.

Deledio averaged 25.3 disposals per game in his 22 appearances for the Tigers this season. The 23-year-old veteran of 128 AFL games had 20 disposals or more 20 times, with a season-best 35 against Hawthorn at the MCG in Round 8. He was ranked No. 1 at the Club for kicks (302), No. 2 for handballs (254), No. 1 for total disposals (556), No. 2 for total marks (116), No. 1 for inside-50 entries (76) and No. 1 for rebound-50s (93).

Newman enjoyed his best season of league football in 2010. The Tiger skipper averaged 19.5 disposals per game in his 21 appearances, with a season-high 28 against reigning premier Geelong at Skilled Stadium in Round 6. He had 20 disposals or more on 12 occasions. In the rebound-50s category at the Club, he was ranked No. 2, with a total of 79, while he was ranked No. 5 for total disposals (410), No. 4 for total marks (101), No. 6 for inside-50 entries (52), and equal No.5 for tackles (68).

Riewoldt kicked 78 goals in his 22 games this season, winning the Coleman Medal as the competition’s leading goalkicker. He scored three goals or more 14 times, and four goals or more on eight occasions. From Round 8-15, he booted 43 goals, the highest individual total in a consecutive eight-game period by an AFL player since Essendon’s Matthew Lloyd in 2001. Riewoldt was ranked No. 1 at the Club for total marks (123), No. 1 for contested marks (54), No. 1 for marks inside-50 (79), and equal No. 5 for tackles (68).

Martin had a major impact in Richmond’s midfield throughout his debut season of AFL football. The 19-year-old averaged just over 20 disposals per match in his 21 games. He had 20 disposals or more 11 times, with a season-high 26 against Brisbane at the Gabba in Round 13. He was ranked No. 1 at the Club for clearances (97), No. 3 for total disposals (425), No. 2 for inside-50 entries (74), No. 2 for contested possessions (179) and No. 4 for tackles (70).

The 2010 Jack Dyer Medallist should come from that talented Tiger quartet, although Shane Tuck, who has finished top-10 in the Best and Fairest in each of his five full seasons at Punt Road also has claims, along with the much-improved Shane Edwards.

Best win of the year...

With the season for the Tigers now officially over for 2010, it might be timely to reflect on some of the seasons highlights.

Best win of the year for me was the win over the Swans when we were 33 pts down.

Best mark of the year could go to a number of Jack's efforts and I'm going for his effort in the first Saints game.

Goal of the year for me goes to Edwards dancing side kick goal against Brisbane at the Gabba. A touch of Rioli and KB all in one in that effort.

Best coaching effort was in the Port game at AAMI when the message was as simple just keep the ball moving, win the contested and kick it whenever possible. Simple wet weather rules that scored us our first win of the year.

Break out year has to go to Jack for his 78 goals and scoring the Coleman medal. A fantastic effort.

Surprise packet of the year is a toss up between King and Graham for the fantastic displine they demonstrated and adhering to team rules. Great development in them both.

Best first year player goes without doubt to Dustin Martin who should be the Rising Star for 2010 except for an anomoly in the criteria rules. A fantastic first year and future ahead of him.

That's some of my personal highlights from the 2010 season for the RFC.

HAWTHORN footballer Travis Tuck has been treated for a drug overdose after being found unconscious in the street.

Tuck – the son of Hawk legend Michael Tuck - was found by patrolling police in Berwick, at about midnight last Friday.

He was slumped in a vehicle parked in Lyall Rd.

Alarmed officers immediately called for an ambulance to help the stricken Tuck.

By the time paramedics arrived, he had regained consciousness and was taken to hospital.

A small glass jar containing a clear liquid was found.

Drug paraphernalia, including a pipe, was also allegedly located in the car.

Police said he would not be pursued over the incident.

Hawthorn would not confirm the identity of the player but did release a statement from chief executive Stuart Fox.

”The player was discharged from hospital into the care of his family following an incident in the early hours of Saturday morning,” he said.

“The Club and the players family will continue to support the player to ensure his personal health and welfare is secured.

“The Club has notified the AFL of the incident and will keep them fully informed if any more information comes to light.”

RICHMOND'S season has ended on a sour note with Jake King facing a one-match suspension for striking Justin Westhoff during Sunday’s 10-point loss to Port Adelaide at Etihad Stadium.

King was cited by the match review panel after he was captured on camera punching Westhoff in the ribs during the final quarter.

The Port player fell to the ground at the time, although no free kick was paid.

The contact only drew enough points to warrant a reprimand, but King’s poor record of three matches suspended within the past three years, meant the penalty was increased to a one-match ban, which cannot be reduced with an early guilty plea because he also has carry-over points from his last suspension.

Unless King takes the charge to the tribunal and successfully overturns the findings he will miss Richmond's round one game of the 2011 season.
